Discussing Race Online

Overall, I feel that online is not the place to discuss race. I feel this because online, people don't have as much consequences because things are said anonymously and other people online can't physically hurt you for your opinion. Though I never think people should be hurt for their opinion, people should have consequences for things they say if they are harmful and hurtful. And usually online, things are not "instant" in the sense that you may come back to the website a day later to continue the conversation instead of have an actual human conversation. Plus, people online tend to be more crude and hateful out loud.

I do see some benefits, but mostly this applies to all online discussions. People that tend to be quiet and not speak up normally have a way to speak up when they feel most comfortable. Again, this applies to all online discussions though.

My possible 5 ideas

I could write about the following:

FML (don't ask, look it up)
Craigslist
Apple Discussions or similar
CreativeCow
HV20.com

I think my commonplace for 2 of them (CreativeCow and HV20) is film.

My Discourse Communities

Discourse communities are groups of people that share interests or goals and usually communicate with one another. This doesn't have to be a dedicated website because it could also just be an email list that you subscribe to. I belong to quite a few discourse communities. Engadget is a website I comment on and many people visit for news, opinions, and full on review of the latest and greatest in gadgetry and technology. I subscribe to emails from national organizations that are supposed to help me get connected to others. I subscribe to work emails that constantly update me on issues and I update them on issues too. I am part of the Apple Discussions page when people need help. I do a pretty good job on helping people there and have many posts. I don't just stay on Apple's official one, but stray over to MacRumors or AppleInsider to help people on their Apple computers. I hardly have to do anything though, they hardly have issues.
